Hey everyone!

It's almost midnight, but I felt like I need to add some more, than just a recent update on the Wikia.
Yes, I still play Telehack, did some playing on Uplink too, but I just can't let go from Telehack, maybe because it's closer to reality more.
Forbin keeps the game luckily updated, I just can't get myself doing more work on the Wikia, maybe step by step. I am already planning on moving the Wikia page to my own device, since some issues are getting annoying.

About my device: I have made my old EeePC (701) working as server, added an external USB as supportive HDD; I hope it will last long. I currently host a Gopher site on the device, some more services as well, but only Gopher is being accessible from the outside. Please read more on the Gopher protocol here.

I have also experimented with Eggdrop as well, released Garfield, the bot to the in-official IRC channel of Telehack. I also started working on my old 486, allowed Ethernet and Internet on it under DOS. Got installed Arachne as web-browser, added SSH support; was trying on installing DesqView, but it won't cooperate with me under FreeDOS. Installed DR-DOS aside FreeDOS; looking forward to the results.

Aside from the geeky stuff the family is fine, daughter is doing well too, she is around 8kgs, 10 months old, but she is a cheeky one. She finds always the open spaces, small parts of the room to discover everything.

I ve been thinking about your question. when I was at university today I had an idea, what could be usefull to you... I hope it will be^^:

so the first one shows, the rough positions of light and shadow: a bit above the middle of the sphere the highlight starts. Of course the highlight is a reflection as well (lamp or in this case the sky).

As you can see, there is also a lighter tone at the bottom, which is the reflection of the ground. In this case the ground is white so the reflection is white as well. If you paint your shape this way, it will already look quite nifty.

In the second sphere I did a grading in the sky because the sky always appears to be lighter where it touches the ground. Here I just made it lighter, but you could reflect a whole city's buildings in there^^ (if you got the time).

The third one: One of the most pregnant differences between glass and metal is, that in metal shaders the reflection becomes less visibly at borders, when in glass shaders the reflection becomes stronger at borders (in majority of cases). Here you can also see how a checked plane as a ground would be reflected on a sphere.

I think, when you understand, how to give this material to a sphere, you can give it to almost everything like in the fourth, a cylinder. Here as you can see I did an extra highlight. When you want it even more flat, just blur the bottom border of the sky reflection (that will do it).
So dented objects can still be difficult but I guess there is nothing to say against doing a bit of cheating ^^...

I hope I could help and if you need some further stuff, feel free to ask! greets and cheers!

Hey there!

Thank you for the detailed explanation. Sorry for replying this late, I see, that it has been a week by now already. Looking at your description and explanation it seems to be easier, than I have thought, though I need to consider some scenarios too. Like what if the glass is being covered by a non transparent layer, like a black matte layer? I guess the height of reflection also comes from the thickness of the material seen here, because while the glassed ball looks like reflecting at 3/4 of it's height, the rod seems having that around at 1/2.

I will go on and analyse your reply furthermore; thank you for the explanation! :D
